روحيmy soul ترُوحُgoes forth in the evening وتغتَديand goes forth in the morning
روحي ترُوحُ وتغتَدي
أبداًforever تحنّyearns إِلىfor اللّقاءreunion
أبداً تحنّ إِلى اللّقاء
My soul goes forth at evening and at dawn,
My soul roams and takes rest
Forever yearning for reunion,
Always yearning for the meeting
حتىuntil إذاwhen بخلتwithheld عليfrom (first part of عليها)
حتى إذا بخلت علي
هاher (completing عليها) الأرضُthe earth يمّمَتِturned toward السماءthe sky
ها الأرضُ يمّمَتِ السماء
Until, when reunion is withheld from
Until when the earth was stingy with me
Her by the earth, she turns toward the sky.
The heavens turned their gaze
فإذاthen when سمعتِyou hear (feminine) الرّاديوthe radio
فإذا سمعتِ الرّاديو
ياO أختَsister of روحيmy soul فيin المساءthe evening
يا أختَ روحي في المساء
Then, when you hear the radio,
So when you hear the radio
O sister of my soul, in the evening,
Oh sister of my soul in the evening
فاصغيthen listen (feminine) إِلىto نغَماتهاher melodies
فاصغي إِلى نغَماتها
فيin طيّthe folds of موجاتwaves of الهواءthe air
في طيّ موجات الهواء
Listen, then, to her melodies
Listen to its melodies
Within the folds of the airwaves.
In the fold of the airwaves
قوليsay (feminine) إذاwhen ولّىhas departed الأسىsorrow
قولي إذا ولّى الأسى
والقلبُand the heart حلّsettled بهin it العزاءsolace
والقلبُ حلّ به العزاء
Say, when sorrow has departed
Say, when sadness recedes
And solace has settled in the heart:
And the heart is filled with solace
روحانtwo souls قَدalready جمعَتهماhas united them both
روحان قَد جمعَتهما
رُغمَdespite النوىseparation لغةُthe language of الفضاءspace
رُغمَ النوى لغةُ الفضاء
Two souls have been united,
Two souls united
Despite separation, by the language of space.
