    When they spread word that I

    Had grown feeble with advancing age,

    And had no worldly wealth,

    And no longing in my soul,

    And boasted to me of wealth—

    Though wealth can never suffice—

    I laughed at them, but

    My sorrow for them grew.

    If they saw through my eye

    And heard with my ear,

    They would forsake Sulayma and come

    To learn renunciation from me.

    كلَّا ولا همُ منِّي

    But I am not of their kind;

    No, nor are they of mine.

    And I went on, poetry my constant pursuit,

    And the abode of inspiration my shelter.

    أو ذرَّ فجري أُغنِّي

    When my night grows dark, I commune;

    Or when my dawn breaks, I sing.

    Yes, by the muse of my poetry,

    My hut is like the Garden of Eden.
