وفدحنيand weighed me down حِملٌa burden ثقيلٌheavy حملتُهُI bore it
منof الحُبِّlove لاnot تقوىcan withstand عليهit النوازلُcalamities
And a heavy burden I bore weighed me down,
a burden of love that calamities cannot withstand.
وأسهرand kept sleepless ليليmy night إنهindeed it عادbecame شائناًdisgracing
عدُوُّthe enemy أخلائيof my dear friends الذينwhom أُنازلُI battle
And it kept my night sleepless; indeed, it had become a source of disgrace,
the enemy of my dear friends, whom I battle.
فلماso when سلوتُI got over الحُبَّlove ألقيتI cast off ثقلهُits burden
وثقلُand the burden الهوىof passion لاmay it not كانbe للمرءfor a man شاغلُa distraction
So when I put love behind me, I cast off its burden.
And passion’s burden—may it never be a distraction to a man!
فبتُّso I spent the night مُراحrelieved الظَّهرِin the back هادٍa guide فيin الهوىlove
رمتنيassailed me العدىthe enemies فاستدبرتنيthen turned their backs on me العواذلُthe reproaching women
So I spent the night, my back unburdened, a guide in love.
My enemies assailed me, then the reproaching women turned their backs on me.
