Who will comfort an eye that saw a visiting phantom,
Whoever saw an apparition gently standing
Standing thus over us, standing still,
Thus upon us with poise

Saluting painfully then swiftly turned away
Then turned away, stirring a frail heart.
Leaving a feeble heart raging

Would that my soul—and would that the souls of my people—
Would that I or souls of my people were like you
O Yazid of bounty, might shield you from death.
O Yazid, may blessings forever preserve you
