    Friend, I am not sober,

    ever, for love of Dah.

Love of Dah now strikes sparks

    within my ravaged heart.

    إِنَّ قَلبي ذو جَناحِ

    My heart has inclined toward her;

    indeed, my heart is winged.

And in loving Dah, it defied

    every faultfinder and reproacher.

If only I had messengers from the jinn

and the winds, to reach her,

to convey my wishes for me,

    then return with success.

    Dah, Dah, Nasr's beloved,

    ah, for love of you—ah!

    By God, I am slain

    by you, without a wound.

She slew me with no sword,

    no, nor with dusky spears.

You are a slayer of people

    through love, not weapons,

    with beauty and coquetry,

    with coyness and playful jest,

    with two ensnaring eyes

and a mouth like chamomile blossoms.

If only I were a dove,

    yours, with clipped wings.

    لَستُ مِن أَهلِ الفَلاحِ

    People, leave me be;

I am not among those who find salvation.

    I am a man tormented

by love of languid yet healthy beauties.

I am a lover of beautiful women,

a companion of pleasure and wine,

except that I do not approach

    the door of fornication, ever.

    Indeed, Ibn Nusayr's dwelling

is a mine of fair-skinned beauties.

Dah is there, and there is no

    sin in loving Dah.

And a maiden other than Dah,

    given to pleasure and jest:

I have braved, to reach her,

the terror of night and barking.

So leave us alone with a maiden,

    tender, slender beneath her sash.

Then I clothed myself in the white folds of flesh

    of the full-bodied young beauty.

    Then, when a cock crowed

before the proper hour of dawn,

I said, "Crow a thousand times, O cock!

This is no time to depart,

until I see dawn, even if

my exposure surely comes with dawn."
