خَليلَيَّmy two friends هَذاthis رَبعُthe campsite of لَيلىLayla فَقَيِّداso tether, you two

بَعيرَيكُماyour two camels ثُمَّthen اِبكِياweep, you two وَتَحَلَّداand be steadfast, you two
My two friends, this is Layla's campsite; tether
Your two camels, then weep and steel yourselves.
قفاstop, you two أَسعِدانيmourn with me, you two بارَكَmay bless اللَهُGod فيكُماupon you both
وَإِنand if أَنتُماyou two لَمnot تَفعَلاdo, you two ذاكَthat فَاِقعُداthen sit down, you two
Stop and mourn with me; may God bless you both.
And if you two will not do that, then sit down.
وَإِلّاand if not فَسيراthen go, you two وَاِترُكانيand leave me, you two وَعَولَتيand my wailing

Otherwise, go on and leave me with my wailing;
I shall tell the ruined dwelling's two sides, "Mourn with me."
فَقالاthen they both said وَقَدand already طالَhad grown long الثوِيُّthe stay عَلَيهِماfor them both
لَعَلَّكَperhaps you أَنto تَنسىforget وَأَنand to تَتَجَلَّداsteel yourself
Then they said, their stay having grown long:
"Perhaps you will forget and steel yourself.
فَسِرso go عَنكَyour way قَدindeed عَنَّيتَناyou have wearied us وَحَبَستَناand detained us
عَلىat دِمَنِthe traces of الأَطلالِthe ruined dwellings يَوماًa day مُطَرَّداunbroken
So go your way; you have wearied us and kept us
At the traces of ruined dwellings for a whole unbroken day."

وَماyet not كُنتُwas I أَهلاًdeserving فيin الهَوىlove أَنto أُفَنَّداbe deemed foolish
My friend foolishly reproaches me over Layla,
Yet in love I never deserved to be deemed a fool.
لَعَمريby my life أَيO لَيلىLayla لَئِنeven if شَطَّتِhas carried far away النَوىseparation

By my life, O Layla, though separation has taken
Layla far away, she has surely captured my love-stricken heart.
قَتولٌa slayer بِعَينَيهاwith her two eyes صَيودٌa huntress بِدَلِّهاwith her coy charm

She slays with her eyes and hunts with her coy charm,
And she kills young men only by design.
أَلاah حَبَّذاhow delightful لَيلىLayla وَأَترابُهاand her age-mates الأُلىwho

Ah, how dear are Layla and her age-mates, who
Promised you a tryst with Layla and themselves.
فَأَقبَلنَthen they came مِنfrom شَتّىscattered places ثَلاثاًin threes وَأَربَعاًand in fours

Then they came from scattered places, in threes and fours,
And in twos, walking gently with a supple sway.

They tread on silken mantles, with fever enfolding them,
And trail striped wraps along their sides.

When we met, they said, "Welcome, welcome!
Choose us a seat on the smooth, pebbly plain."
