وَتَزعُمُand she claims أَنّيthat I قَدalready تَبَدَّلتُhave taken instead خُلَّةًa sweetheart
سِواهاother than her هَذاthis الباطِلُthe falsehood المُتَقَوَّلُfabricated
And she claims that I have taken a sweetheart
other than her—this is a fabricated falsehood.
لَحاmay curse اللَهGod مَنwhoever باعَsold الحَبيبَthe beloved بِغَيرِهِfor someone other than him
فَقالَتso she said نَعَمyes حاشاكَfar be it from you إِنif كُنتَyou have تَعقِلُsense
May God curse whoever trades his beloved for another.
She said, 'Yes—far be it from you, if you have sense.
سَتَصرِمُyou will forsake إِنساناًa person إِذاif ماever صَرَمَتنيyou forsake me (contextually)
بِحُبّكَthrough love of you فَاِنظُرso consider بَعدَهُafter him مَنwhom تَبَدَّلُyou take instead
You will forsake a person, if you forsake me,
who loves you; consider whom you will take in his place.'
أَعَلِّلُI console نَفسيmyself مِنكِfrom you بِالوَعدِwith the promise وَالمُنىand hopes
فَهَلّاthen why not بِيَأسٍwith despair مِنكِof you قَلبيmy heart أُعَلَّلُI console
I console myself with promises and hopes from you;
then why not console my heart with despair of you?
وَمَوعِدكِand your promise الشَهدُhoney المُصَفّىpurified حَلاوَةًin sweetness
وَدونَand before نَجازِfulfillment الوَعدِthe promise صابٌbitter sap وَحَنظَلُand colocynth
And your promise is pure honey in sweetness,
but before its fulfillment lie bitter sap and colocynth.
وَأَمنَحُand I bestow طَرفَthe gaze العَينِof the eye غَيرَكِsomeone other than you رِقبَةًout of caution
حِذارَfor fear of العِداthe enemies وَالطَرفُand the gaze نحوَكِtoward you أَميَلُmore inclined
And I direct my gaze toward someone other than you, cautiously,
for fear of foes, though my gaze inclines more toward you,
لِكَيماso that يَقولَmay say الناسُthe people إِنَّindeed أَمراًa man (contextually) رَمىaccused
رَبيعَةَRabi'ah فيconcerning لَيلىLayla بِسوءٍof wrongdoing لِمُبطِلُsurely a false accuser
so that people may say, 'A man who accused
Rabi'ah of wrongdoing over Layla is surely lying.'
لَقَدindeed كَذَبَlied الواشونَthe slanderers بَغياًout of malice عَلَيهِماagainst them both
وَماand none مِنهُماof the two of them إِلّاbut بَريءٌinnocent مُعَقَّلُrestrained
The slanderers have indeed lied, out of malice against them both,
and both are innocent and restrained.
فَلَوso if كُنتَI were (contextually) ذاpossessed of عَقلٍreason لَأَجمَعتُI would resolve on صَرمَكُمforsaking you
بِرَأييby my judgment وَلَكِنّيbut I اِمرِؤٌa man لَستُI am not أَعقِلُsensible
If I had sense, I would resolve to forsake you,
by my own judgment; but I am a man who has no sense.
وَكَيفَand how بِصَبرِwith the patience القَلبِof the heart لاno كَيفَhow عَنكُمُaway from you
وَبابُand the door فُؤاديof my heart دونَagainst صَرمِكِforsaking you مُقفَلُlocked
And how could the heart endure without you? There is no way,
and my heart's door is locked against forsaking you.
وَمِنand from أَينَwhere لاno مِنfrom أَينَwhere يُحرَمُis forbidden قَتلكُمkilling you
وَقَتليand killing me لَكُمfor you ياO أُمَّmother of لَيلىLayla مُحَلَّلُpermitted
And why—there is no reason—should killing you be forbidden,
while killing me is lawful for you, O Umm Layla?
أَغَرَّكِhas it emboldened you أَنthat لاno صَبرَpatience ليfor me فيin طِلابِكُمseeking you
وَأَنand that لَيسَthere is not ليfor me إِلّاexcept عَلَيكon you معَوَّلُreliance
Has it emboldened you that I have no patience in seeking you,
and that I have no one but you to rely on?
وَلَمّاand when تَبَيَّنتِyou perceived الَّذيwhat بيin me مِنَof الهَوىpassion
وَأَيقَنتِand you were certain أَنّيthat I عَنكِaway from you لاnot أَتَحَوَّلُI turn
And when you perceived the passion within me
and were certain that I would not turn away from you,
ظَلَمتِyou acted unjustly كَذِئبِlike the wolf السَوءِof evil إِذاwhen قالَhe said مَرَّةًonce
لِسَخلٍto a lamb رَأىhe saw وَالذِئبُwhile the wolf غَرثانُhungry مُرمِلُwithout provisions
you wronged me like the wicked wolf, who once said
to a lamb he saw, while the wolf was hungry and without provisions:
أَأَنتَare you الَّذيthe one who فيin غَيرِthe absence of جُرمٍwrongdoing شَتمتَنيyou insulted me
فَقالَso he said مَتىwhen ذاthat قالَhe said ذاthat عامُyear أَوَّلُprevious
'Are you the one who insulted me though I had done no wrong?'
He said, 'When was that?' The wolf said, 'Last year.'
فَقالَso he said وُلِدتُI was born العامَthis year بَلrather رُمتَyou intended غَدرَةًan act of treachery
فَدونَكَso take me كُلنيeat me لاno هَناenjoyment لَكَfor you مَأكَلُmeal
He said, 'I was born this year! You only intended treachery.
Here, then—eat me! May your meal bring you no pleasure!'
أَتَبكينَdo you weep مِنover قَتليkilling me وَأَنتِwhile you قَتَلتِنيkilled me
بِحُبَّكِthrough love of you قَتلاًa killing بَيِّناًplain لَيسَnot يُشكِلُis ambiguous
Do you weep over my death, though you have killed me
through love of you—a plain killing that cannot be mistaken?
فَأَنتِfor you كَذبّاحِlike a slaughterer العَصافيرِof sparrows دائِباًunceasingly
وَعَيناهُand his eyes مِنfrom وَجدٍgrief عَلَيهِنَّfor them تَهمِلُstream
For you are like one who tirelessly slaughters sparrows,
while his eyes stream with grief for them.
فَلَوso if كانَit were مِنfrom رَأفٍtenderness بِهِنَّtoward them وَرَحمَةٍand mercy
لَكَفَّhe would restrain يَداًa hand لَيسَتis not مِنَfrom الذَبحِslaughter تَعطلُidle
If it came from tenderness toward them and mercy,
he would stay the hand that never rests from slaughter.
فَلاso do not تَنظُريlook ماwhat تَهمِلُsheds العَينُthe eye وَاِنظُريand look
إِلىat الكَفِّthe hand ماذاwhat بِالعَصافيرِto the sparrows تَفعَلُit does
So do not look at what the eye sheds; look instead
at the hand—what it does to the sparrows.
هِبينيconsider me اِمرِءاًa man أَذنَبتُI sinned ذَنباًa sin جَهِلتُهُI did not know it
وَلَمand did not آتِهِI commit it عَمداًdeliberately وَذوand one possessed of الحِلمِforbearance يَجهَلُacts rashly
Consider me a man who committed a sin unknowingly,
and did not commit it deliberately—even the forbearing can act rashly.
عَفاmay forgive اللَهُGod عَمّاfor what قَدalready مَضىhas passed لَستُI am not عائِداًreturning
وَهاand here أَناI ذاthis one منfrom سُخطِكُمyour displeasure أتَنَصَّلُI seek release
May God forgive what has passed; I shall not repeat it,
and here I am, seeking release from your displeasure.
