خَليلَيَّmy two friends هَذاthis رَبعُthe dwelling-place of لَيلىLayla فَقَيِّداso hobble, both of you
بَعيرَيكُماyour two camels ثُمَّthen اِبكِياweep, both of you وَتَحَلَّداand linger, both of you
My two friends, this is Layla's dwelling-place—so hobble
your two camels, then weep and linger.
قفاstop, both of you أَسعِدانيhelp me mourn, both of you بارَكَmay bless اللَهُGod فيكُماin you both
وَإِنand if أَنتُماyou two لَمnot تَفعَلاdo, both of you ذاكَthat فَاِقعُداthen sit down, both of you
Stop and help me mourn; may God bless you both.
And if you two will not do that, then sit down.
وَإِلّاand otherwise فَسيراthen go, both of you وَاِترُكانيand leave me, both of you وَعَولَتيand my wailing
أَقُلI shall say لِجَنابِيto the two sides of دِمنَةِthe ruins of الدارِthe dwelling أَسعِداjoin in mourning, both of you
Or else go on, and leave me with my wailing;
I will tell the two sides of the dwelling's ruins, 'Help me mourn.'
فَقالاthen the two said وَقَدand already طالَgrew long الثوِيُّthe stay عَلَيهِماfor them both
لَعَلَّكَperhaps you أَنto تَنسىyou forget وَأَنand to تَتَجَلَّداyou bear up
Then the two said, the stay having grown long for them,
'Perhaps you will forget and bear up;
فَسِرso go عَنكَaway with you قَدalready عَنَّيتَناyou have wearied us وَحَبَستَناand you have detained us
عَلىat دِمَنِthe traces of الأَطلالِthe ruined dwellings يَوماًa day مُطَرَّداuninterrupted
so move on: you have wearied us and detained us
at the traces of the ruins for a whole, unbroken day.'
يَلومُhe reproaches عَلىover لَيلىLayla خَليليmy friend سَفاهَةًfoolishly
وَماand not كُنتُI was أَهلاًdeserving فيin الهَوىlove أَنto أُفَنَّداbe deemed foolish
My friend foolishly reproaches me over Layla,
yet I never deserved to be called foolish for my love.
لَعَمريby my life أَيO لَيلىLayla لَئِنeven if شَطَّتِwent far away النَوىseparation

By my life, O Layla, though separation has carried
Layla far away, she has surely snared my love-stricken heart.
قَتولٌa deadly slayer بِعَينَيهاwith her two eyes صَيودٌa keen huntress بِدَلِّهاwith her coy charm
وَماand not تَقتُلُshe kills الفِتيانthe young men إِلّاexcept تَعَمُّداdeliberately
A slayer with her eyes, a huntress with her coy charm,
and she kills young men only by design.
أَلاAh! حَبَّذاhow delightful لَيلىLayla وَأَترابُهاand her age-mates الأُلىwho

وَعَدنَكَthey promised you مِنfrom لَيلىLayla وَمِنهُنَّand from them مَوعِداa tryst
Ah, how delightful are Layla and her age-mates, who
promised you a tryst with Layla and with themselves.
فَأَقبَلنَthen they came مِنfrom شَتّىvarious places ثَلاثاًin threes وَأَربَعاًand in fours
وَثِنتَينِand in twos يَمشينَthey walk الهَوَيناslowly تَأَوُّداswaying
Then they came from different places, in threes and fours,
and in twos, walking slowly with a swaying gait.
يَطَأنَthey tread upon مُروطَmantles الخِزِّsilk cloth يَلحَفُهاcloaks them الحمىfever

They tread on silken mantles, fever cloaking them,
and trail striped wraps along their flanks.
فَلَمّاthen when اِلتَقَيناwe met قَلنthey said أَهلاًwelcome وَمَرحَباًand welcome

Then, when we met, they said, 'Welcome and well met!
Choose us a place to sit on the level, pebbly valley floor.'
