غَداةَon the morning when غَدامِنِهاhe departed from it at dawn الأَغَرُّthe illustrious اِبنُson of حاتِمِHatim
The people of Egypt wept with streaming tears
The people of Egypt cried with flowing tears
on the morning when the illustrious son of Hatim departed from it.
The morning its most honourable son Ibn Hatim left
حَلَفتُI swore يَميناًan oath غَيرَnot ذيhaving مَثنَوِيَّةٍa reservation
يَمينَthe oath of اِمرِئٍa man آلىwho swore بِهاby it غَيرِnot آثِمِsinning
I swore an oath admitting no reservation,
I swore an oath not lightly taken
the oath of a man who swore it without sin.
The oath of a man who fulfilled it without sin
لِشَتّانَhow great the difference ماwhat بَينَbetween اليَزيدَينِthe two Yazids فيin النَدىgenerosity
يَزيدِYazid of سُلَيمٍSulaym وَالأَغَرَّand the illustrious اِبنِson of حاتِمِHatim
How far apart the two Yazids are in generosity—
What a difference between the two Yazids regarding glory
Yazid of Sulaym and the illustrious son of Hatim.
Yazid ibn Suleim and the most honourable Ibn Hatim
يَزيدُYazid of سُلَيمٍSulaym سالَمَmade peace with المالَwealth وَالفَتىand the young man
أَخوthe kinsman of الأَزدِAzd لِلأَموالِwith riches غَيرُnot مُسالِمِat peace
Yazid of Sulaym made peace with wealth, but the young man—
Yazid ibn Suleim spared wealth and men
the kinsman of Azd—is not at peace with riches.
While the brother of Azd was unforgiving to wealth
فَهَمُّso the concern of الفَتىthe young man الأَزدِيِّthe Azdi إِتلافُexhausting مالِهِhis wealth
وَهَمُّand the concern of الفَتىthe young man القَيسِيِّthe Qaysi جَمعُamassing الدَراهِمِdirhams
So the Azdi youth's concern is to exhaust his wealth,
The concern of the Azdi man was ruining his wealth
while the Qaysi youth's concern is to amass dirhams.
While the concern of the Qaysi man was gathering dirhams
فَلاso let not يَحسَبِthink التَمتامُthe stammerer أَنّيthat I هَجَوتُهُlampooned him
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I فَضَّلتُpreferred أَهلَthe people of المَكارِمِnoble deeds
So let the stammerer not think I have lampooned him;
Let not Atmatam think I maligned him
rather, I have preferred the people of noble deeds.
Rather I preferred the people of virtues
فَياso, O أَيَّهاyou الساعيthe striver الَّذيwho لَيسis not مُدرِكاًattaining
بِمَسعاتِهِthrough his efforts سَعيَthe striving of البُحورِthe seas الخَضارِمِboundless
So, O striver, who cannot match
O you who strive but cannot attain
through his efforts the striving of the boundless seas:
With your efforts the vast, crashing seas
سَعَيتُI strove وَلَمand did not تُدرِكyou attain نَوالَthe bounty of اِبنِthe son of حاتِمِHatim
لِفَكِّfor freeing أَسيرٍa captive وَاِحتِمالِand shouldering العَظائِمِgreat burdens
I strove, but you did not attain the bounty of the son of Hatim,
I strove but could not attain the feats of Ibn Hatim
in freeing a captive and shouldering great burdens.
In freeing captives and bearing calamities
كَفاكَhas spared you بِناءَbuilding المَكرُماتِnoble deeds اِبنُthe son of حاتِمٍHatim
وَنِمتand you slept وَماand not الأَزدِيُّthe Azdi عَنهاconcerning them بِنائِمِasleep
The son of Hatim has spared you the task of building noble deeds;
The building of noble deeds suffices, Ibn Hatim
and you slept, while the Azdi does not sleep in their pursuit.
While the Azdi remains asleep to them
فَياso, O اِبنِson of اُسَيدٍUsayd لاdo not تُسامِrival اِبنَthe son of حاتِمٍHatim
فَتَقرَعَlest you strike إِنif سامَيتَهُyou rival him سِنَّthe tooth of نادِمِa regretful man
So, O son of Usayd, do not rival the son of Hatim,
O son of a master, do not criticize Ibn Hatim
lest, if you rival him, you gnash your teeth in remorse.
Lest you bang your head if you do against regret
هُوَhe البَحرُthe sea إِنif كَلَّفتَyou compel نَفسَكَyourself خَوضَهُto wade into it
تَهالَكتَyou would perish فيin آذِيِّهِits waves المُتَلاطِمِclashing
He is the sea: if you make yourself wade into it,
He is a sea - if you venture to cross it
you will perish amid its clashing waves.
You will perish in its raging billows
تَمَنَّيتَyou wished for مَجداًglory فيin سُلَيمِSulaym سَفاهَةًfoolishly
أَمانيthe wishes of خالٍan idle man أَوor أَمانيthe wishes of حالِمِa dreamer
Foolishly you wished for glory in Sulaym—
You wished for glory in the foolishness of Suleim
an idle man's wishes, or a dreamer's wishes.
Wishes of a dreamer or wishes of a madman
أَلاbehold إِنَماonly آلُthe house of المُهَلَّبِal-Muhallab غُرَّةٌa bright forehead-blaze
وَفيand in الحَربِwar قاداتٌleaders لَكُمfor you بِالخَزائِمِby nose-rings
Behold, the house of al-Muhallab alone is a radiant blaze on the brow,
Beware the Banu Muhalab are but fools
and in war they lead you by nose-rings.
And in war they bring you disastrous defeats
هُمُthey الأُنفُthe nose فيin الخُرطومِthe snout وَالناسُand the people َبَعدَهُمafter them
مَناسِمُcamel foot-pads وَالخُرطومُand the snout فَوقَabove المَناسِمِthe foot-pads
They are the nose upon the snout; the people after them
They are the nose while the people are behind them
are camel foot-pads, and the snout is above the foot-pads.
Dividers while the proboscis is above the dividers
قَضَيتُI have judged لَكُمin your favor آلَO house of المُهَلَّبِal-Muhallab بِالعُلاwith preeminence
وَتَفضيلُكُمand giving you precedence حَقٌّa duty عَلىupon كُلِّevery حالِمِmature man
I have awarded you preeminence, O house of al-Muhallab,
I have judged for you, O Banu Muhalab, exaltation
and giving you precedence is a duty for every mature man.
And your preference is a right upon every dreamer
لَكُمyou have شِيَمٌcharacter traits لَيسَتare not لِخَلقٍfor anyone سِواكُمُbesides you

You have qualities possessed by no one besides you:
You have a nobility no other people possess
generosity and steadfast valor amid fierce battles.
Magnanimity and true courage in battles

You hold wealth cheap in whatever befalls you,
Degraders of wealth when it comes to you
uplifters of the fallen, defenders of every offender.
Provisions you defend from every aggressor

O Abu Khalid, you are the one whose name is acclaimed
O Abu Khalid you whose name is praised
when one of the great calamities befalls the people.
Whenever people face a great calamity

You have spared the sons of al-Abbas every great calamity,
You suffice the Abbasids against every hardship
and you were the best champion in Islam's defense.
And were the best protector of Islam
