O abode of Asmāʾ, at al-Amthāl, then al-Rajal,
O house of Asma, exemplified in proverbs, and the man
Greetings to you, desolate dwelling-site and ruined remains!
Greeted from barren wilderness and from hills

As though, after the days of those who knew it,
As if after the era of those who covenanted with it
It were the non-Arabs' parchments or embroidered robes.
It is the nighttime sojourns of non-Arabs or the land’s embroidered cloak

A home where we dwelt awhile—and what dwelling
A house we were rich with once, but what riches
Has not changed, bereft of its people, O daughter of al-Ḍabbī?
Can compare to its people, O daughter of al-Labbi, it cannot replace
