O snow, in my morning and in my dusk,

O snow, on the crown of my head and on my roads!

You narrowed, O snow, every open space.

O snow, you strained even the broadest patience.

You scattered, O snow, those once united.

You severed every earner's means of livelihood.

    O white-faced one, without shame,

you blackened the lives of thousands with flashing light.

O you who resemble the air in its lightness,

you have become like a lid upon the hearts.

And O guest who settled among us like wasting sickness

in the body, you left us barely alive.

And O burdensome one, arriving and departing,

you have become like a mote in the eyes.

O coldest of creatures, leave alone a city

whose [sons?] pray for your drowning.

    قلوب أهليه منك في حرق

    Its rivers have frozen because of you;

its people's hearts burn with anguish from you.

O worst of guests, you terrified our souls.

Our birds are afraid of meeting you.

You shriveled our bodies; no endurance remains

against the ice, nor is any fuel left.

You left the sun in the sky dimmed,

as though it had never risen above this horizon.

You left our Shahba like a house of decay,

where whoever sought it slept and did not wake.

    Hungry crows caw within it,

and wild beasts nearly roam the roads.

No vegetation, no water—for it is frozen solid.

Nay, who has seen sweat frozen solid?

    تفلق الصخر كل منفلق

    You crack brass and iron alike;

    you cleave rock wholly asunder.

You stayed with us all month without a break,

pouring and gushing, O worst of downpours!

And you added ten days, still not departing.

Are you, O snow, never to depart?

    You rose beyond a cubit's height;

by God, is this from you out of spite?

Will you linger forever in our homes?

You clung like glue, the worst thing ever to cling.

Are you resolved to erase our region

from the face of the earth, with a departing one's resolve?

How many a wall that butted against the sky became

cracked, then collapsed beneath the strain!

And many a tomb, with no strength left

to withstand you—you brought it down to dust.

You destroyed our sheep and our birds.

The happy among us became wretched because of you.

The poor among us spend the night in fear,

empty-bellied, while the rich lie sleepless.

And all rise in the morning to tread upon

    despair, hardship, and slippery ground.

I do not deny the benefactors their due:

they have followed one course in generosity.

They gave freely; how many a blessed hand

has loosened the noose of someone choking!

O scourge of the sky, have we sinned, and is there no

righteous, devout intercessor in our land?

O scourge of the earth, these are the homes of the people of the

faiths—is there no [pure soul?] in these homes?

Each regards his own creed as the straight path,

and reason judges by the clearest ways.

Religion belongs to God, and the land to those

who have made it their home, from every sect.

Rise to learning, all of you, and abandon

every dispute that leads onto slippery ground.

The treasures of this earth lie beneath your feet,

and the difference between peoples is as clear as dawn.

You will not prosper so long as your leader keeps

fomenting hostility and duplicity against you.

You will not become a cultivated nation

except through learning free from murk.

    يا ويلنا من غوائل الحدق

    Indeed, enemies are surrounding us;

woe to us from the treachery of those eyes!

    بالروح أفديه ليس بالورق

    Is there someone among us who says, 'This is my homeland;

I ransom it with my soul, not with silver'?

Such are those who have reached

the heights of greatness at the roads' farthest ends.

How numerous the pretenders, when questioned,

    and how few answer truthfully!

Perhaps, now that time has schooled us,

we will seek concord as a breadwinner strives.

Perhaps these lands will be made fortunate

by their people, while ill fortunes fade away.

The time has come for the lands to flourish through you,

O mainstay of our homelands—I say it without flattery.
