1. قد هيجت وجدي لبسط العتاب

    صحيفة جاءت بفصل الخطاب

    My yearning has indeed been stirred to voice reproach

    by a newspaper that came bearing the decisive word.

  2. وشى حواشي بردها كاتب

    اقدامه تنقل فوق السحاب

    A writer embroidered the fringes of its striped cloak,

    whose feet are borne above the clouds.

  3. ذو همة بل فكرة قد غدت

    تصطاد ما يعجز عنه العقاب

    Possessed of resolve—nay, of a mind that has come

    to hunt what the eagle is powerless to catch.

  4. إن قال إقدامي يقول الورى

    إقدام بين الصحف فصل الخطاب

    If he says, "My Iqdam," the world says:

    "Iqdam, among newspapers, is the decisive word."

  5. ما جئت للمدح ولكنني

    هيج بي ذكرك عهد الصحاب

    I did not come to praise; rather,

    the thought of you has awakened in me the days of companions.

  6. شوقي إلى عهد كمال الصفا

    شوقي إلى عهد الهوى والشباب

    My longing is for the days of perfect friendship;

    my longing is for the days of love and youth.

  7. بالله هل تذكر عهدا به

    طلع في الشهباء مثل الشهاب

    By God, do you remember a time when

    he rose in al-Shahba like a shooting star,

  8. وعشرة مرة لنا والصفا

    يا كامل الفضل سريع الجواب

    and the fellowship once ours, and unclouded affection,

    O Kamil, perfect in virtue and swift to reply?

  9. فاذكر بخير حلبا انها

    تحفظ للأحباب عهد اغتراب

    So speak well of Aleppo, for she

    preserves for loved ones the bond of their sojourn abroad.
