By God, how happy I am, my lady,

at this meeting after bitter absence!

Among all the women I have loved, I have found

your love alone foremost, O my heart's desire.

Do you remember the tale of love and what

happened to us? It is all in my mind.

It was in the summer that has now passed.

Alas, my mistress and my enchantment!

Do you know, O love aged

like wine, that when winter comes,

I shall reach the twentieth year of my youth,

and you, six years beyond twelve?

And now, O love of my heart, know:

even if my rose has withered a little,

    it still belongs to beauty.

And you, O my enchantress and my paradise,

who have no equal in beauty, nor

in love's excess and the folly of youthful passion,

do you remember what happened that summer,

the vengeance of wrath, not a blessing's radiance?

When you gave me, to make clear

what lay between us, your necklace one night,

it stayed between my hands for three

nights, which I spent without neglect,

at times clasping it to my chest, afraid

of losing it, and at times bringing it close for a kiss.

And I do not forget a devilish nursemaid

whom you took as a companion for comfort and service.

She was the worst informer against us that

day—and truly it was a day of vengeance,

when you sought, O pearl of Andalusia,

O beautiful one, to kill two without mercy:

a lover slain by his joy, and

the husband, that old man, slain by jealousy.

And yet beware, O my pearl,

for this love is a love of sudden ardor.

Whatever they say of it, it must

return one day to that heart.

For a heart that once held you, O desire of the

soul, has grown spacious enough for another passion.

And what can I say, when thus the world

has run its course among people, ruled by omnipotence?

And how can I repel waves when

they have come one after another, and I have no strength?

So close your eyes to me and withhold

your hands from me, and be happy in forgetting me.

Farewell—my soul is with you, O my lady.

This is the way of humankind in this turmoil.

The wings of days do not spare

a summer, nor anyone who summered in this place.

Indeed, life and the times that go with it

will both drift away like a feather.

    Likewise hopes, fame, and the

lover, whatever he has tasted in love.

And you, O you who, after all this,

do not remember even part of that tale.
