Peace upon the dear, dried-up friend.

Peace be upon the beloved vinegar essence

على مفرد الدنيا على معدن الذكا

على مفرد الدنيا على معدن الذكا

على اصدق الاحباب في القرب والبعد

على اصدق الاحباب في القرب والبعد

Upon the world's peerless one, upon the mine of intelligence.

Upon the unique one of the world, upon the mine of intellect

Upon the truest of friends, in nearness and distance.

Upon the most truthful of friends in proximity and remoteness

على ذلك الوجه المغسل بالحبا

على ذلك الوجه المغسل بالحبا

وحامض فحم يزدري ابيض القند

وحامض فحم يزدري ابيض القند

Upon that face washed with gifts,

Upon that face washed with love

And carbonic acid, scorning white sugar.

And acidic charcoal that scorns white candy

Upon the gatherer of hidden grace and the lote tree of

Upon the gatherer of hidden kindness and lote tree of the far point

Fidelity, and the seat of revelation—the revelation of Ibn ʿAjrad.

And the place of revelation and revelation of Ibn 'Ajrad

على جبة ما قد تكفن قبله

على جبة ما قد تكفن قبله

بها ذو حياة ولاهو كالأسد الورد

بها ذو حياة ولاهو كالأسد الورد

Upon a robe—no one before him had ever shrouded himself

Upon a robe not wrapped before him

In it while alive; nor is he like the tawny lion.

With it one with life and not like the pink lion

على طاهر الأذيال ذيل قميصه

على طاهر الأذيال ذيل قميصه

وتبانه والطيلسان مع البند

Upon him of spotless hems—the hem of his shirt,

Upon the pure train, the train of his shirt

And his drawers and the mantle, together with the fastening.

And his turban and the sash with the waistband
