You stripped my bones of their flesh and left them

Stripped bare, sun-exposed toward it, and growing cold.

And you emptied them of their marrow, as though they were

Glass bottles in whose hollows the wind whistles.

When they hear the beloved mentioned, torn apart are

Their bonds, from what they fear and dread.

Take my hand, then lift me up; discern

The suffering in me, though I conceal it.

So what recourse have I if you have no mercy

On me, and I have no patience to endure being without you?

For, by God, I have not fallen short in what I believe to be

Your pleasure; but I am an unappreciated lover.

And what flows from the eye is not its water,

But it is a soul that melts and then drips.
