عَدوّاً وَلَم نَسمَع بِهِ قيلَ صاحِبِ
While Layla's love stayed pure, we did not, concerning it, heed
The love of Layla was pure, we did not obey
an enemy, nor listen to a companion's words about it.
An enemy because of it, nor did we hear it said by a companion.
فَلَمّاthen, when تَوَلّىturned وُدُّlove لَيلىLayla لِجانِبٍtoward a side
فَلَمّا تَوَلّى وُدُّ لَيلى لِجانِبٍ
وَقَومٍand a group تَوَلَّيناwe turned لِقَومٍtoward a group وَجانِبِand a side
وَقَومٍ تَوَلَّينا لِقَومٍ وَجانِبِ
Then, when Layla's love turned toward one side
So when the love of Layla inclined to a side
and one group, we turned toward another group and another side.
And people, we inclined to a people and a side.

And every close friend after Layla fears me
And every friend after Layla fears me
lest I betray him, or is satisfied with moderate affection.
For treachery, or is content with a proximate love.
