تَمُرُّpasses الصَباthe east wind صَفحاًsidelong بِساكِنِby the dweller ذيpossessor of الغَضىthe ghada trees
وَيَصدَعُand rends قَلبيmy heart أَنthat يَهُبَّshould blow هُبوبُهاits blowing
The east wind passes sidelong by the dweller of Dhu al-Ghada,
The morning breeze passes gently by the abode of him who is angry with me,
and its blowing rends my heart.
And my heart quakes that its passing might stir him.
إِذاwhen هَبَّتِblows الريحُthe wind الشَمالُthe north فَإِنَّماthen it is only
جَوايَmy heartache بِماfrom what تَهديbrings إِلَيَّto me جُنوبُهاits flanks
When the north wind blows, it is only
When the north wind blows, it only brings me
what its flanks bring me that causes my heartache.
Tidings of the south wind's gift to me.
قَريبَةُrecent عَهدٍcontact بِالحَبيبِwith the beloved وَإِنَّماand it is only
هَوىlonging كُلَّevery نَفسٍsoul حَيثُwhere كانَwas حَبيبُهاits beloved
Fresh from the beloved's company; and it is only
The days with my beloved seem so recent,
where its beloved is that each soul's longing lies.
For every soul yearns where its beloved may be.
وَحَسبُand enough for اللَياليthe nights أَنthat طَرَحنَكِthey cast you مَطرَحاًa place to be cast into
بِدارِin an abode of قِلىًhatred تُمسيyou spend the evening وَأَنتَwhile you غَريبُهاa stranger in it
And the nights have done enough by casting you
The nights were enough to lay you down in a faraway house,
into an abode of hatred, where you spend the evening a stranger.
Where you spend the evening a stranger.
