تَعودُshe visits مَريضاًa sick man أَسقَمَتهُshe made him ill بِهَجرِهاby her abandonment
وَلَوand if عاوَدَتهُshe visited him again عادَhe would become لاnot يَعرِفُknow السُقماillness
She visits a sick man whom her desertion has made ill,
She visits a sick man whom she made ill by forsaking him.
And if she visited him again, he would recover, knowing sickness no more.
And were she to visit him again, he would no longer know illness.
لَقَدindeed أَضرَمَتshe kindled فيin القَلبِthe heart ناراًa fire مِنَof الجَوىlove's anguish
فَماso not تَرَكَتit left عَظماًany bone وَلاnor تَرَكَتit left لَحماany flesh
She has kindled in the heart a fire born of longing,
She has indeed kindled in the heart a fire of love's anguish,
Leaving neither bone nor flesh unconsumed.
So it has left no bone, nor has it left any flesh.
وَإِنّيand indeed I عَلىdespite هِجرانِهاher abandonment وَصُدودِهاand her rejection
وَماand what حَلَّbefell بيupon me مِنهاfrom her أَرىI deem حُبَّهاlove for her حَتماinevitable
Despite her forsaking me and turning away,
And I, despite her abandonment and her rejection,
And all that I have suffered through her, I deem loving her inevitable.
And what has befallen me through her, deem my love for her inevitable.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends كُفّاyou two, desist لاdo not تَلوماyou two reproach مُتَيَّماًone enslaved by love
وَلاand do not تَقتُلاyou two kill صَبّاًan ardent lover بِلَومِكُماwith your reproach (both of you) ظُلماunjustly
My two companions, desist—do not blame one enthralled by love,
My two friends, desist: do not reproach a man enslaved by love,
And do not unjustly kill a passionate lover with your reproach.
And do not unjustly kill an ardent lover with your reproaches.
