الحُبُّlove أَعظَمُgreater مِمّاthan what بِالمَجانينِafflicts the mad
She said, “You have gone mad over me”; so I said to her:
She said: you have gone mad, so I said to her:
Love is greater than what afflicts the mad.
Love is greater than what the insane have.
الحُبُّlove لَيسَdoes not يُفيقُregain his senses الدَهرَthroughout life صاحِبُهُits sufferer
وَإِنَّماbut only يُصرَعُis seized by a fit المَجنونُthe madman فيat الحينِa particular time
Love's sufferer never regains his senses throughout his life,
Love does not make its companion alert in life,
Whereas the madman is seized by fits only now and then.
Rather the lunatic perishes in an instant.
لَوif تَعلَمينَyou knew إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle غِبتِyou were absent ماwhat سَقميmy illness
وَكَيفَand how تَسهَرُstays awake عَينيmy eye لَمnot تَلومينيyou blame me
If you knew, when you are away, how ill I am,
If you knew, when I was absent, my sickness,
And how my eye remains sleepless, you would not blame me.
And how my eyes stay up, you would not blame me.
