خَلَتshe departed عَنfrom ثَرىthe soil of نَجدٍNajd فَماso not طابَwas sweet بَعدَهاafter her
خَلَت عَن ثَرى نَجدٍ فَما طابَ بَعدَها
وَلَوand if راجَعَتshe returned to نَجداًNajd لَطابَwould be sweet إِذَنthen نَجدُNajd
وَلَو راجَعَت نَجداً لَطابَ إِذَن نَجدُ
She left the soil of Najd, and it was no longer sweet after her departure.
She left the soil of Najd, and after her departure it was no more sweet,
And were she to return to Najd, Najd would then be sweet.
Had she but turned again to Najd, then would Najd once more turn sweet.

It is despair of Layla, though love for her
Despair of union with Layla is with me still, yet will love of her
Is firmly anchored and remains with us still.
Abide with me, long as the camping-grounds abide amidst the hills.
