أَياO جَبَلَيtwo mountains of نَعمانَNa'man بِاللَهِby God خَلِّياmake way, you two
سَبيلَthe path of الصَباthe east wind يَخلُصmay pass freely إِلَيَّto me نَسيمُهاits breeze
O two mountains of Na'man, by God, make way
O mountains of Na'man, by Allah let
for the east wind, so its breeze may reach me.
The breeze of morning pass through to me
أَجِدI may feel بَردَهاits coolness أَوor تَشفِit may soothe مِنّيfrom me حَرارَةًa burning heat
عَلىupon كَبِدٍa liver لَمnot يَبقَremain إِلّاexcept صَميمُهاits innermost core
Let me feel its coolness, or let it soothe the burning in me,
May I feel its coolness, or may it heal
upon a liver with nothing left but its innermost core.
A liver that holds nothing but its core
فَإِنَّfor indeed الصَباthe east wind ريحٌa wind إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) تَنَسَّمَتit breathes gently
عَلىupon نَفسِthe soul of مَحزونٍa sorrowful person تَجَلَّتare dispelled هُمومُهاits cares
For the east wind is a wind that, whenever it breathes
For morning breeze, when it wafts gently
upon a sorrowful soul, its cares are dispelled.
Upon a grieving soul, soothes its pains
لَيالِيَnights when أَهلوناour families بِنَعمانَat Na'man جيرَةٌneighbors
وَإِذand when نَحنُwe نُرضيهاwe please her بِدارٍwith a dwelling نُقيمُهاwe establish it
Those nights when our families were neighbors at Na'man,
Evenings made us neighbors of Na'man
and when we pleased her with a dwelling we established.
As we settled, pleasing them, in our homes
وَياand O ريحُwind مُرّيpass بِالدِيارِby the dwellings فَخَبِّريthen tell
أَباقِيَةٌdo they remain? أَمor قَدalready تَعَفَّتhave been effaced رُسومُهاtheir traces
And O wind, pass by the dwellings, then tell me:
O wind that blows in the dwellings, inform:
Do they remain, or have their traces been effaced?
Do ruins still stand or have they wasted?
أَلاbehold إِنَّindeed أَدوائيmy ailments بِلَيلىbecause of Layla قَديمَةٌlong-standing
وَأَقتَلُand the deadliest داءِailment of العاشِقينَlovers قَديمُهاthe long-standing one among them
Behold, my ailments from Layla are long-standing,
My anguish for Layla is of old
and the deadliest of lovers' ailments is the long-standing one.
And best at slaying lovers' illness is its elder
تَذَكَّرتُI recalled وَصلَreunion الناعِجيّاتِal-Na'ijiyyat بِالضُحىin the forenoon
وَلَذَّةَand the delight of عَيشٍa life قَدalready تَوَلّىhas passed away نَعيمُهاits bliss
I recalled reunion at al-Na'ijiyyat in the forenoon,
I recalled the mating of gazelles at dawn
and the delight of a life whose bliss has passed away.
And the joy of life now gone from its bliss
وَأَنتِand you (feminine) الَّتيshe who هَيَّجتِyou stirred عَينِيَmy eye بِالبُكاwith weeping
فَأَسجَمَso gushed غَرباهاits two tear ducts فَطالَso grew long سُجومُهاits streaming
And you are she who stirred my eye to weeping,
You who stirred my eyes to weep
so its two tear ducts gushed, and long was its streaming.
So their tears flowed and gloom intensified
وَقَدand already قَذِيَتwas chafed عَينيmy eye بِلَيلىbecause of Layla وَأَتبَعَتand she followed up
قَذاهاits irritation وَقَدand sometimes يَأتيcomes عَلىupon العَينِthe eye شومُهاits ill fortune
And my eye has been chafed by Layla, and she has added to
Layla's love tormented my eyes and pursued
its irritation; an eye's ill fortune may indeed bring it to ruin.
Their tears, though harm may yet visit them
خَليلَيَّmy two friends قوماrise, you two بِالعِصابَةِwith the bandage فَاِعصِباthen bind, you two
عَلىupon كَبِدٍa liver لَمnot يَبقَremain إِلّاexcept رَميمُهاits crumbling remains
My two friends, rise with the bandage and bind it
My friends, bandage with cloth
upon a liver with nothing left but its crumbling remains.
A liver that holds nothing left but shreds
