O Layla’s dwelling at the edge of the encampment, you have been effaced,

Except for the thumam grass and the fire’s hearth.

All your life you keep dying for Layla like this,

At a place where she stood, or beside a dwelling.

Your remembrance of her has worn away your bones after your flesh,

As the carver whittles an arrow shaft of shawhat wood.
