O father, leave me to all that I have suffered;
O my father, leave me with what I have endured,
and do not keep pressing me, heartsore and ailing,
And do not reproach one sorrowful at heart and sick,
عَديمَdevoid of التَشَكّيcomplaint باكِيَweeping العَينِthe eye ساهِراًsleepless
عَديمَ التَشَكّي باكِيَ العَينِ ساهِراً

حَليفَ الأَسى لِلِاِصطِبارِ عَديما
never complaining, tearful-eyed and wakeful,
Without complaint, weeping-eyed and sleepless,
sorrow’s constant companion, bereft of all endurance.
An ally of sorrow, bereft of patience.
كَلِفتُI became enamored بِهاof her حَتّىuntil أَذابَنِيَmelted me الهَوىpassion
كَلِفتُ بِها حَتّى أَذابَنِيَ الهَوى

وَصَيَّرَ عَظمي بِالغَرامِ رَميما
I became so enamored of her that love melted me,
I was enamored of her until passion melted me away,
and through passion made my bones crumble into dust.
And made my bones decay through consuming love.

وَأَكثَرُ مِنها بَهجَةً وَنَعيما
My father says, “Qays, I have one unlike her,
My father says: “O Qays, I have another in her place,
more radiant than she and richer in delight—
More beautiful and more delightful than she.

And I myself seek a lineage that is noble.”

“I am content with whatever you have faulted in her, Father;
I accept what you faulted in her, my father,
let her lineage be deemed base among all women.”
And let her lineage be scorned among women.
