لاNo أَيُّهاO البَيتُhouse الَّذيthat لاI do not أَزورُهُI visit it
وَهُجرانُهُand shunning it مِنّيby me إِلَيهِtoward it ذُنوبُsins
No, O house that I do not visit,
my shunning you is a sin against you.
I kept away from you مُشتاقاًwhile longing وَزُرتُكِand I visited you خائِفاًwhile afraid
وَفيكِand because of you عَليَّover me الدَهرَalways مِنكِfrom you رَقيبُa watcher
I kept away from you while longing for you, and visited you in fear;
because of you, a watcher of yours is over me always.
I shall seek the favor of الأَيامَthe days فيكِfor your sake لَعَلَّهاperhaps they
بِيَومِwith a day سُرورٍof joy فيin هَواكِloving you تُثيبُthey will repay
I shall seek the days’ favor for your sake; perhaps
they will repay me with a joyful day in loving you.
وَأُفرِدتَand you were set apart إِفرادَlike the setting apart of الطَريدِthe outcast وَباعَدَتand drew away
إِلىfrom النَفسِthe soul حاجاتٌneeds وَهُنَّand they قَريبُare near
And you were set apart like an outcast, while needs drew away
from the soul, though they were near.
لَئِنeven if حالَcomes between يَأسيmy despair دونَand لَيلىLayla لَرُبَّماperhaps
أَتىcame اليَأسُdespair دونَbefore الأَمرِthe matter فَهوَand it عَصيبُis hard
Even if despair comes between me and Layla, perhaps
despair has come before the matter is settled, hard though it is.
وَمَنَّيتِنيand you gave me hope حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen ماindeed رَأَيتِنيyou saw me
عَلىon شَرَفٍa height لِلناظِرينَto those looking يَريبُthat troubles
You gave me hope until, when you saw me
on a height that troubled those who looked on,
صَدَدتِyou turned away وَأَشمَتِّand you made gloat العَدوَّthe enemy بِصَرمِناover our separation
أَثابَكِmay he reward you ياO لَيلىLayla الجَزاءُwith recompense مَثيبُthe one who rewards
you turned away and made the enemy gloat over our separation.
May the one who gives recompense repay you, O Layla.
جَرىflowed السَيلُthe torrent فَاِستَبكانِيَand it made me weep السَيلُthe torrent إِذwhen جَرىit flowed
وَفاضَتand poured forth لَهُfor it مِنfrom مُقلَتَيَّmy two eyes غُروبُstreams of tears
The torrent flowed, and its flowing made me weep;
streams poured from my eyes for it.
وَماand not ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept حينَwhen أَيقَنتُI became certain أَنَّهُthat it
يَكونُwould be بِوادٍin a valley أَنتِyou مِنهُto it قَريبُare near
That was only because I was certain it would pass
through a valley near you.
يَكونُit is أُجاجاًbrackish دونَكُمbefore reaching you فَإِذاbut when اِنتَهىit arrives
إِلَيكُمto you تَلَقّىit receives طيبَكُمyour sweetness فَيَطيبُand becomes sweet
It is brackish before it reaches you; but when it comes
to you, it receives your sweetness and becomes sweet.
فَياso O ساكِنيdwellers of أَكنافِthe surroundings of نَخلَةَNakhla كُلُّكُمall of you
إِلىto القَلبِthe heart مِنbecause of أَجلِfor the sake of الحَبيبِthe beloved حَبيبُare dear
O dwellers around Nakhla, every one of you
is dear to my heart for the beloved’s sake.
أَظَلُّI remain غَريبَa stranger to the home الدارِin فيthe land of أَرضِAmir’s people عامِرٍamong them
أَلاindeed كُلَّevery مَهجورٍforsaken person هُناكَthere غَريبُis a stranger
I remain a stranger to my home in the land of Amir;
indeed, everyone forsaken there is a stranger.
وَإِنَّand indeed الكَثيبَthe dune الفَردَthe solitary one مِنon أَيمَنِthe right side of الحِمىthe protected grounds
إِلَيَّto me وَإِنeven though لَمI did not آتِهِI go to it لَحَبيبُis surely dear
And the solitary dune to the right of the protected grounds
is dear to me, though I have never gone to it.
فَلاso there is no خَيرَgood فيin الدُنياthe world إِذاif أَنتَyou لَمdo not تَزُرvisit
حَبيباًa beloved وَلَمand did not يَطرَبfeel delight إِلَيكَtoward you حَبيبُa beloved
There is no good in the world if you do not visit
a beloved, and no beloved delights in you.
