تُبَكّي عَلى نَجدٍ لَعَلّي أُعينُها
My two friends, is there in al-Sham a sorrowful eye
My friend, are there any tearful eyes in Damascus
Weeping for Najd? Perhaps I can help it.
That weep for Najd, perhaps I may weep with them,
قَدَalready اِسلَمَهاabandoned it الباكونَthe weepers إِلّاexcept حَمامَةًa dove
قَدَ اِسلَمَها الباكونَ إِلّا حَمامَةً
مُطَوَّقَةًring-necked بانَتshe parted وَبانَand parted قَرينُهاher mate
مُطَوَّقَةً بانَت وَبانَ قَرينُها
The weepers have forsaken it, save a dove,
The enemies have seized it except for a dove
Ring-necked, who has parted, and whose mate has parted too.
Collared as it cries and its mate answers,
تُجاوِبُهاanswers her أُخرىanother عَلىupon خَيزُرانَةٍa bamboo stem

يَكادُ يُدَنّيها مِنَ الأَرضِ لينُها
Another answers her upon a bamboo stem,
Another responds from a tamarisk tree,
Whose suppleness almost brings her down to the ground.
Bending with its softness almost to the ground.
