بِنَفسِيَwith my life as ransom مَنthe one whom لاno بُدَّalternative ليfor me أَنto أُهاجِرُهforsake him
وَمَنand the one whom أَناI فيin المَيسورِease وَالعُسرِand hardship ذاكِرُهremembering him
My life be ransom for the one I must forsake,
With my soul, whom I must emigrate from
And whom I remember in ease and hardship;
And whom am I remembering in ease and hardship
وَمَنand the one whom قَدindeed رَماهُaccused him الناسُthe people بيon my account فَاِتَّقاهُمُso he guarded himself against them
بِهَجرِيَby forsaking me إِلّاexcept ماwhat تُجَنُّconceal ضَمائِرُهhis innermost thoughts
And whom people accused on my account, so he shielded himself from them
And whom people threw stones at me, so beware of them
By forsaking me—except for what his innermost thoughts conceal.
With my emigration unless what their consciences conceal
فَمِنso for أَجلِهاher sake ضاقَتgrew narrow عَلَيَّaround me بِرُحبِهاdespite its breadth
بِلادِيَmy homeland إِذsince لَمdid not أَرضَfeel content عَمَّنwith whomever أُجاوِرُهI live beside him
For her sake, for all its breadth, it grew narrow around me—
For their sake, my country narrowed down on me
My homeland, since I was not content with those I lived beside.
When I was not pleased with those I dwelled with
وَمِنand for أَجلِهاher sake أَحبَبتُI loved مَنthe one who لاnot يُحِبُّنيloves me
وَباغَضتُand I hated مَنthe one whom قَدindeed كُنتُI used to حيناًfor a time أُعاشِرُهkeep company with him
And for her sake I loved one who does not love me,
And for their sake I loved those who do not love me
And hated one whose company I once kept.
And hated those whom I used to befriend
أَتَهجُرُwill you forsake? بَيتاًa house لِلحَبيبِof the beloved تَعَلَّقَتclung
بِهِto it الحِبُّthe beloved وَالأَعداءُand the enemies أَمor أَنتَyou زائِرُهvisiting it
Will you forsake a house of the beloved, to which have clung
Shall I emigrate from a home that love clung to
The beloved and the enemies—or will you visit it?
Where both loved ones and enemies visit
وَكَيفَand how خَلاصيmy escape مِنfrom جَوىthe burning anguish of الحُبِّlove بَعدَماnow that
يُسَرُّis gladdened بِهِby it بَطنُthe interior of الفُؤادِthe heart وَظاهِرُهand its exterior
And how can I escape love's burning anguish, now that
How can I free myself from the agony of love after
The heart's depths and its surface are gladdened by it?
It pleased the core of my heart and its surface
وَقَدand indeed ماتَdied قَبليbefore me أَوَّلُthe beginning of الحُبِّlove فَاِنقَضىso it came to an end
فَإِنso if مِتُّI die أَضحىbecomes الحُبُّlove قَدalready ماتَdied آخِرُهits last part
And the beginning of love died before me and came to an end;
The first of love died before me, so it was over
So if I die, the last of love will have died.
For if I die, love itself would have died last
وَقَدand indeed كانَit was قَبليbefore me فيwithin حِجابٍa veil يَكُنُّهُshelters it
فَحُبُّكِyet your love مِنfrom دونِwithout الحِجابِthe veil يُباشِرُهtouches it directly
And before me, it was within a veil that sheltered it;
And it was before me behind a veil that hid it
Yet your love touches it directly, with no veil between.
Your love without the veil directly encounters it
أَصُدُّI turn away حَياءًout of modesty أَنlest يَلِجَّpersist relentlessly بِيَwith me الهَوىpassion
وَفيكِand in you المُنىthe hopes لَولاwere it not for عَدُوٌّan enemy أُحاوِرُهI parley with him
I turn away in modesty, lest passion press relentlessly upon me;
I block passion shyly from entering me
And in you lie my hopes, were it not for a foe with whom I parley.
Though in you is what I wish, unless I converse with a foe
