أَلاListen! أَيُّهاO you النوّامُsleepers وَيَحكُمُwoe to you هُبّواwake up!
أُسائِلُكُمI ask you هَلwhether يَقتُلُkills الرَجُلَthe man الحُبُّlove
Listen, you sleepers—woe to you! Wake up!
O you who are asleep, awake!
I ask you: does love kill a man?
I ask you, does love kill a man?
فَقالواso they said نَعَمyes حَتّىuntil يَرُضَّcrushes عِظامَهُhis bones
وَيَترُكَهُand leaves him حَيرانَbewildered لَيسَthere is no لَهُfor him لُبُّreason
They said: yes, until it crushes his bones
They said, yes it does, until it pleases his bones,
And leaves him bewildered, bereft of reason.
And leaves him confused, with no sense left.
فَياso, O بَعلَhusband of لَيلىLayla كَيفَhow يُجمَعُis brought together شَملُناour company
لَدَيَّin my presence وَفيماand in what بَينَناbetween us شَبَّتِflared up الحَربُwar
So, O Layla's husband, how can we be brought together
So my Layla's husband, how can we reunite,
In my presence, when war has flared between us?
When between us war has grown?
لَهاhers مِثلُthe like of ذَنبيmy guilt اليَومَtoday إِنif كُنتُI was مُذنِباًguilty
وَلاand no ذَنبَguilt ليfor me إِنif كانَwas لَيسَthere is no لَهاfor her ذَنبُguilt
Her guilt is like mine today, if I am guilty,
Today she has a sin like mine, if I am sinful,
And I have no guilt if she has none.
And I have no sin, if she has none.
