إِلَيكَaway with you عَنِّيَfrom me هائِمٌlovelorn وَصِبٌailing
أَماdo you not تَرىsee الجِسمَthe body قَدalready أَودىbrought ruin بِهِupon it العَطَبُaffliction
Leave me alone: I am lovelorn and ailing.
My longing and passion for you grows
Do you not see how affliction has already brought the body to ruin?
Do you not see what illness has done to my body?
لِلَّهِto God (an exclamation) قَلبِيَmy heart ماذاwhat قَدindeed أُتيحَwas allotted لَهُto it
حَرُّthe heat الصَبابَةِof ardent love وَالأَوجاعُand pains وَالوَصَبُand sickness
God help my heart—what has been allotted to it:
My heart, what has it been made to endure?
The heat of ardent love, pains, and sickness.
The heat of yearning, the pain, the trials.
ضاقَتgrew narrow عَلَيَّfor me بِلادُthe lands اللَهِof God ماhowever much رَحُبَتthey were spacious
ياO لَلرِجالِmen, to the rescue فَهَلthen is there فيin الأَرضِthe earth مُضطَرَبُa place to roam
God's lands have grown narrow for me, for all their breadth.
God’s vast lands feel constricted to me.
O men! Is there, then, any place on earth to roam?
Oh men, is there no one else suffering in this world?
البَينُseparation يُؤلِمُنيpains me وَالشَوقُand longing يَجرَحُنيwounds me
وَالدارُand the dwelling نازِحَةٌfar away وَالشَملُand the union مُنشَعِبُsundered
Separation pains me, and longing wounds me.
Separation pains me, desire wounds me,
And the dwelling lies far away, and our union is sundered.
My home abandoned, my family torn apart.
كَيفَhow السَبيلُthe way إِلىto لَيلىLayla وَقَدand already حُجِبَتshe has been screened away
عَهديmy recollection بِهاof her زَمَناًat a time ماno دونَهاbefore her حُجُبُveils
How can I reach Layla, now that she has been screened away?
How can I reach Layla when she is veiled?
I knew her once, when no veils stood between us.
Long have I known her, no veils between us.
