لَوif سيلَwere asked أَهلُthe people of الهَوىlove مِنfrom بَعدِafter مَوتِهِمُtheir death
لَو سيلَ أَهلُ الهَوى مِن بَعدِ مَوتِهِمُ
هَلhave ...? فُرِّجَتbeen relieved عَنكُمُfrom you مُذsince مِتُّمُyou died الكُرَبُthe sorrows
هَل فُرِّجَت عَنكُمُ مُذ مِتُّمُ الكُرَبُ
If lovers were asked after their death,
If the torrents of those who died of passion could flow again after their death
“Have the sorrows been lifted from you since you died?”
Would your sorrows have been eased since you died in agony?
لَقالَwould say صادِقُهُمthe truthful one among them أَنthat قَدindeed بَلىhas decayed جَسَديmy body
لَقالَ صادِقُهُم أَن قَد بَلى جَسَدي
لَكِنَّbut نارَthe fire of الهَوىlove فيin القَلبِthe heart تَلتَهِبُblazes
لَكِنَّ نارَ الهَوى في القَلبِ تَلتَهِبُ
The truthful one among them would say: “My body has indeed decayed,
Their true lovers would say: “Yes, my body perished
but the fire of love blazes in the heart.
But the fire of passion in my heart still blazes”
جَفَّتdried up مَدامِعُtear ducts عَينِthe eye of الجِسمِthe body حينَwhen بَكىit wept
جَفَّت مَدامِعُ عَينِ الجِسمِ حينَ بَكى
وَإِنَّand indeed بِالدَمعِwith tears عَينَthe eye of الروحِthe soul تَنسَكِبُpours forth
وَإِنَّ بِالدَمعِ عَينَ الروحِ تَنسَكِبُ
The tear ducts of the body's eye dried up when it wept,
The tears from the eyes of the flesh dried up when it wept
and indeed, the soul's eye streams with tears.”
But the eyes of the soul still pour down tears in streams
