لوif كانَwere ليfor me قلبانtwo hearts لعشتI would live بواحدٍwith one
وأفردتُand I would set apart قلباًa heart فيin هواكَlove for you يُعذَّبُis tormented
If I had two hearts, I would live with one,
If I had two hearts I would live with one
and set the other apart to be tormented in love for you.
And devote a heart to your love to suffer
لكنَّbut ليfor me قلباًa heart تّمَلكَهُhas possessed it الهَوىpassion
لاnot العَيشُlife يحلُوis sweet لَهُto it ولاnor الموتُdeath يَقْرَبُdraws near
But I have a heart that passion has possessed;
But I have a heart possessed by passion
life is not sweet to it, nor does death draw near.
Neither life is sweet nor does death approach
كَعُصفُورةٍlike a sparrow فيin كفِّpalm طفلٍa child يُهِينُهاmistreats it
تُعَانِيsuffers عَذابَtorment المَوتِdeath والطِفلُand the child يلعبُplays
Like a sparrow in the palm of a child who mistreats it,
Like a little bird in a child's fist who abuses it
it suffers the agony of death while the child plays.
It suffers the torture of death while the child plays
فلاfor neither الطفلthe child ذوpossessed of عقلٍsense يرِقُّfeels pity لِحالِهاfor its plight
ولاnor الطّيرُthe bird مَطلُوقُfree الجنَاحَينِboth wings فيذهبُso it can fly away
For the child has no sense to pity its plight,
Neither the child has a mind to pity its state
nor does the bird have both wings free to fly away.
Nor the bird with freed wings to fly away
