I yearn for the land of the Hijaz, and my desire

Is for tents in Najd, beyond the reach of sight.

    أَجَل لا وَلَكِنّي عَلى ذاكَ أَنظُرُ

    And my gaze toward Najd is of no use to me;

No, indeed; but even so I look.

Is there each day a tear, and then a glance

For your eye, whose water flows and streams down?

When will the heart find rest? It is either nearby,

    Sorrowful, or far away, remembering.

They say, "How copiously the tears of his eye flow!

Its tears drip and stream down forever."

And what flows from the eye is not its water,

But a soul that melts and drips.
