أُريدُI wish بِأَلّاthat ... not يَعلَمَknow الناسُthe people أَنَّنيthat I
أُريدُ بِأَلّا يَعلَمَ الناسُ أَنَّني
أُحِبُّكِI love you ياO لَيلىLayla وَأَنand that تَصِلينيyou keep ties with me
أُحِبُّكِ يا لَيلى وَأَن تَصِليني
I wish people would not know that I
I want that people shouldn't know that
love you, O Layla, and I wish you would keep close to me.
I love you, O Laila, and you reach me.
فَكَيفَso how بِهِمwith them لاnot بورِكواmay they be blessed إِنif هَجَرتُهاI forsake her
فَكَيفَ بِهِم لا بورِكوا إِن هَجَرتُها
جَزِعتُI am distraught وَإِمّاand if زُرتُهاI visit her عَذَلونيthey reproach me
جَزِعتُ وَإِمّا زُرتُها عَذَلوني
So what am I to do with them—may they not be blessed! If I forsake her,
So how can I blame them, may they not be blessed, if I abandoned her,
I am distraught; yet if I visit her, they reproach me.
I grieved, and if I visited her, they blamed me.
