I stand in awe of you إِجلالاًout of reverence وَماand not بِكِin you قُدرَةٌpower
عَلَيَّover me وَلَكِنand yet مِلءُthe fullness of عَينٍan eye حَبيبُهاits beloved
I stand in awe of you out of reverence, though you have no power
I stand in awe of you, though you have no power over me,
Over me; yet the eye is filled with its beloved.
But my beloved's eyes are full when looking upon you.
وَماand not هَجَرَتكِit forsook you النَفسُthe soul أَنَّكِbecause you are عِندَهاin its estimation

And my soul forsook you not because it deemed you
My soul did not shun you out of disdain,
Of little worth, but because its share of you dwindled.
Rather, it found but little favor from you.
وَلَكِنَّهُمand yet they ياO أَملَحَloveliest الناسِthe people أَكثَرواthey repeated often

But they, O loveliest of people, kept repeating
Yet, O most caustic of all people, they exaggerated,
Whenever I came, the words: 'This is her beloved.'
Saying “This one is her beloved” whenever I passed by Dhu al-Ghada.
أَتُضرَبُis she to be beaten? لَيلىLayla إِنif مَرَرتُI passed بِذيthrough Dhu (the place of) الغَضىal-Ghada (ghada trees)

Is Layla to be beaten if I pass through Dhu al-Ghada?
What wrong has Layla done if the one who melted her earth cloaked himself?
And what is Layla's fault if her wolf has crossed the land?
