سَأَبكيI shall weep عَلىover ماwhat فاتَhas passed مِنّيfrom me صَبابَةًout of longing
وَأَندُبُand I mourn أَيّامَthe days السُرورِof joy الذَواهِبِnow gone
I shall weep with longing for what has slipped away from me,
And mourn the days of joy now gone.
وَأَمنَعُand I forbid عَينيmy eye أَنto تَلَذَّtake delight بِغَيرِكُمin anyone but you
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِنand even if جانَبتُI have kept away غَيرُnot مُجانِبِone who keeps away
And forbid my eye to delight in anyone but you.
And though I have kept away, I am not estranged.
وَخَيرُand the best زَمانٍtime كُنتُI was أَرجوI hope for دُنُوَّهُits approach
رَمَتنيshot at me عُيونُthe eyes الناسِof the people مِنfrom كُلِّevery جانِبِside
And in the best of times, whose coming I had hoped for,
People's eyes assailed me from every side.
فَأَصبَحتُso I became مَرحوماًpitied وَكُنتُand I had been مُحَسَّداًmuch envied
فَصَبراًso, have patience عَلىwith مَكروهِهاits hardships وَالعَواقِبِand the consequences
So I became an object of pity, though I had been much envied.
So be patient with its hardships and the consequences.
وَلَمand did not أَرَهاI see her إِلّاexcept ثَلاثاًthree times عَلىat مِنىًMina
وَعَهديand my recollection بِهاof her عَذراءُa virgin ذاتُpossessing ذَوائِبِbraids
And I saw her only three times at Mina,
And I remember her as a maiden with braids.
تَبَدَّتshe appeared لَناto us كَالشَمسِlike the sun تَحتَbeneath غَمامَةٍa cloud
بَداappeared حاجِبٌan eyebrow مِنهاof hers وَضَنَّتand she was sparing بِحاجِبِwith an eyebrow
She appeared to us like the sun beneath a cloud:
One eyebrow of hers appeared, and she withheld the other.
