أَقولُI say لِمُفتٍto a jurist ذاتَon a certain يَومٍday لَقيتُهُI met him
بِمَكَّةَin Mecca وَالأَنضاءُand the weary mounts مُلقىًlaid down رِحالُهاtheir saddles
I say to a jurist whom I met one day
I asked a preacher one day when in Mecca I met him,
In Mecca, while the weary mounts’ saddles lay set down:
While the litters were being unloaded of burdens they bore,
بِرَبِّكَby your Lord أَخبِرنيtell me أَلَمhas ... not? تَأثَمِshe sinned الَّتيshe who
أَضَرَّharmed بِجِسميmy body مِنfor زَمانٍsome time خَيالُهاher phantom
“By your Lord, tell me: has she not sinned—the one
"For God's sake, tell me, is she not steeped in sin, she
Whose phantom has long afflicted my body?”
Who so long has afflicted my body and soul?"
فَقالَso he said بَلىyes, indeed وَاللَهِby God سَوفَwill يَمَسُّهاtouch her
عَذابٌtorment وَبَلوىand affliction فيin الحَياةِlife تَنالُهاbefall her
He said, “Yes, by God, she will be touched
Quoth he, "Yes, she sinned, and shall suffer in life for her sinning,
By torment, and affliction will befall her in life.”
Such torture and woe in this world shall her sins repossess."
فَقُلتُso I said وَلَمand did not أَملِكI restrain سَوابِقَthe first rushes عَبرَةٍof tears
سَريعٍswift إِلىinto جَيبِthe opening القَميصِof the shirt اِنهِمالُهاtheir streaming down
So I said, unable to hold back the first tears,
But I, in my haste, could no longer withhold my tears,
Streaming swiftly into the opening of my shirt:
To my bosom with sobs did my shirt straightway press.
عَفاpardoned اللَهُGod عَنهاher ذَنبَهاher sin وَأَقالَهاand absolved her
وَإِنand even if كانَwas فيin الدُنياthis world قَليلاًlittle نَوالُهاher giving
“May God pardon her sin and absolve her,
"God pardon and put her transgression away from her!
Even if her favors in this world were few.”
Though little her joy here on earth, may He merciful prove!"
