أَلاlo إِنَّindeed لَيلىLayla بِالعِراقِin Iraq مَريضَةٌill
وَأَنتَwhile you خَليُّuntroubled البالِin mind تَلهوyou amuse yourself وَتَرقُدُand you sleep
Lo, Layla is ill in Iraq,
While you, carefree, amuse yourself and sleep.
فَلَوfor if كُنتَyou were ياO مَجنونُMajnun تَضنىyou waste away مِنَfrom الهَوىlove
لَبِتَّyou would spend the night كَماas باتَspent the night السَليمُthe snakebitten man المُسَهَّدُkept awake
For if you, O Majnun, were wasting away with love,
You would pass the night like a sleepless, snakebitten man.
يَقولونَthey say لَيلىLayla بِالعِراقِin Iraq مَريضَةٌill
فَماthen what لَكَwith you لاnot تَضنىyou waste away وَأَنتَwhile you صَديقُa friend
They say, "Layla is ill in Iraq—
So why do you not waste away, though you are her friend?"
شَفىmay heal اللَهُGod مَرضىthe sick بِالعِراقِin Iraq فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
عَلىtoward كُلِّall مَرضىthe sick بِالعِراقِin Iraq شَفيقُcompassionate
May God heal the sick in Iraq, for I
Feel compassion for all the sick in Iraq.
فَإِنand if تَكُis لَيلىLayla بِالعِراقِin Iraq مَريضَةًill
فَإِنِّيَthen indeed I فيin بَحرِa sea of الحُتوفِdeaths غَريقُdrowning
And if Layla is ill in Iraq,
Then I am drowning in a sea of death.
أَهيمُI wander distraught بِأَقطارِthrough the far reaches of البِلادِthe land وَعَرضِهاand its breadth
وَماليand I have no إِلىto لَيلىLayla الغَداةَthis morning طَريقُa way
I wander distraught through the land's far reaches and across its breadth,
Yet this morning I have no road to Layla.
كَأَنَّas though فُؤاديmy heart فيهِwithin it مورٍone kindling fire بِقادِحٍwith a fire-striker
وَفيهِand within it لَهيبٌa flame ساطِعٌblazing وَبُروقُand lightning flashes
As though my heart held someone kindling fire with a striker,
And within it are a blazing flame and flashes of lightning.
إِذاwhen ذَكَرَتهاit remembers her النَفسُthe soul ماتَتit dies صَبابَةًof longing
لَهاit has زَفرَةٌa sigh قَتّالَةٌdeadly وَشَهيقُand a gasping breath
Whenever my soul remembers her, it dies of longing;
From it come a deadly sigh and a gasping breath.
سَقَتنِيَshe gave me drink شَمسٌa sun يُخجِلُputs to shame البَدرَthe full moon نورُهاher light
وَيَكسِفُand eclipses ضَوءَthe light of البَرقِlightning وَهوَthough it is بَروقُflashing brightly
A sun gave me drink; her light shames the full moon,
And eclipses lightning's light, though it flashes brightly.
غُرابيَّةُraven-black الفِرعَينِthe two tresses بَدرِيَّةُfull-moon-like السَناthe radiance
وَمَنظَرُهاand her appearance باديmanifest الجَمالِbeauty أَنيقُgraceful
Her two tresses are raven-black, her radiance like the full moon's,
And her appearance is graceful, its beauty plain to see.
وَقَدand indeed صِرتُI have become مَجنوناًmad مِنَfrom الحُبِّlove هائِماًwandering distraught
كَأَنِّيَas though I عانٍa captive فيin القُيودِthe chains وَثيقُfirmly bound
And I have become mad with love, wandering distraught,
As though I were a captive, firmly bound in chains.
أَظَلُّI remain رَزيحَexhausted العَقلِof mind ماnot أُطعَمُI am given to taste الكَرىslumber
وَلِلقَلبِand for the heart مِنّيof mine أَنَّةٌa groan وَخُفوقُand a flutter
I remain exhausted in mind, denied any taste of sleep,
And my heart groans and flutters.
بَرىhas wasted حُبُّهاlove for her جِسميmy body وَقَلبيand my heart وَمُهجَتيand my lifeblood
فَلَمso did not يَبقَremain إِلّاexcept أَعظُمٌbones وَعُروقُand veins
Love for her has wasted my body, my heart, and my lifeblood,
So nothing remained but bones and veins.
فَلاso do not تَعذِلونيblame me إِنif هَلَكتُI perish تَرَحَّمواhave mercy
عَلَيَّupon me فَفَقدُfor the loss of الروحِthe soul لَيسَdoes not يَعوقُhinder
So do not blame me; if I perish, have mercy
Upon me, for the soul's loss is no hindrance.
وَخُطّواand inscribe عَلىupon قَبريmy grave إِذاwhen مِتُّI die وَاِكتُبواand write
قَتيلُone slain by لِحاظٍglances ماتَhe died وَهوَwhile he was عَشيقُa lover
And when I die, inscribe upon my grave and write:
"Slain by glances, he died a lover."
إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشكوI complain ماwhat أُلاقيI suffer مِنَfrom الهَوىlove
بِلَيلىfor Layla فَفيfor in قَلبيmy heart جَوىًburning anguish وَحَريقُand fire
To God I complain of what I suffer from love
For Layla, for in my heart are burning anguish and fire.
