أَإِنis it because سَجَعَتcooed فيin بَطنِthe hollow of وادٍa valley حَمامَةٌa dove
تُجاوِبُanswering أُخرىanother dove دَمعُtears عَينِكَyour eye دافِقُflowing
Is it because a dove cooed in a valley's hollow,
answering another, that tears stream from your eye?
كَأَنَّكَas though you لَمdid not تَسمَعhear بَكاءَthe weeping of حَمامَةٍa dove
بِلَيلٍat night وَلَمand did not يَحزُنكَsadden you إِلفٌa beloved companion مَفارِقُdeparting
As though you had never heard a dove's weeping
at night, nor been saddened by a departing companion,
وَلَمand did not تَرَsee مَفجوعاًone stricken by loss بِشَيءٍover something يُحِبُّهُhe loves it
سِواكَother than you وَلَمand did not يَعشَقlove passionately كَعِشقِكَlike your love عاشِقُa lover
nor seen anyone stricken over something he loves
other than yourself, nor had any lover loved as you love.
بَلىyes indeed وَأَفِقand come to your senses عَنfrom ذِكرِremembrance of لَيلىLayla فَإِنَّماfor only

أَخوthe companion of الحُبِّlove مَنone who ذاقَhas tasted الهَوىpassion وَهوَwhile he is تائِقُyearning
Yes—and rouse yourself from thoughts of Layla, for only
one who has tasted passion and yearns is love's companion.
