أَمُرُّI pass مُجَنِّياًturning aside عَنaway from بَيتِthe house of لَيلىLayla
وَلَمand have not أُلَمِمI stop بِهِat it وَبِيَwhile within me is الغَليلُburning thirst
I pass, turning aside from Layla’s house,
And have not stopped there, though I burn with thirst.
أَمُرُّI pass مُجَنِّباًkeeping away وَهَوايَwhile my love فيهِin it
فَطَرفيso my gaze عَنهُaway from it مُنكَسِرٌdowncast كَليلُweary
I pass, keeping away, though my love is within it;
So my gaze turns away from it, downcast and weary.
وَقَلبيand my heart فيهِin it مُقتَتِلٌembattled فَهَلso is there ليfor me
إِلىto قَلبيmy heart وَساكِنَهُand its inhabitant سَبيلُa way
And my heart is embattled there—is there for me
A way to my heart and the one who dwells in it?
أُؤَمِّلُI hope أَنto أَعِلَّdrink a second draught بِشُربِwith a drink of لَيلىLayla
وَلَمand have not أَنهَلI drink a first draught فَكَيفَso how لِيَfor me العَليلُthe second draught
I hope to drink a second draught of Layla,
Yet I have not drunk the first—how can the second be mine?
