لِكُلِّfor every لِقاءٍmeeting نَلتَقيهِwe share it بَشاشَةٌa cheerful welcome
وَإِنand even if كانَit lasted حَولاًa year كُلَّevery يَومٍday أَزورُهاI visit her
Every meeting we share brings a cheerful welcome,
even if I visit her every day for a year.
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle جِئتُI came لَيلىLayla تَبَرقَعَتshe veiled her face
فَقَدso indeed رابَنيtroubled me مِنهاfrom her الغَداةَthis morning سُفورُهاher unveiling
And whenever I came to Layla, she would veil her face;
so her unveiling this morning has made me uneasy.
وَقَدand indeed رابَنيtroubled me مِنهاfrom her صُدودٌaversion رَأَيتُهُI saw it
وَإِعراضُهاand her turning away عَنfrom جانِبيmy side وَبُسورُهاand her scowling
And the aversion I saw in her has troubled me,
and her turning away from my side, and her scowling.
أَلاtake heed إِنَّindeed لَيلىLayla قَدalready أَجَدَّbecame earnest بُكورُهاher early departure
وَمَرَّتand passed on غَداةَthe morning of السَبتِSaturday لِلبَينِfor separation عيرُهاher caravan
Ah, Layla's early departure is now in earnest,
and on Saturday morning her caravan passed on, taking her away.
فَماfor no أَسوَدٌa black one أَلمىdusky المَحاجِرِthe eye sockets مُطفِلٌhaving young
بِأَحسَنَany lovelier مِنهاthan her مُقلَتَينِtwo eyes تُديرُهاshe turns them
For no dark creature, dusky around the eyes and with young,
has a lovelier pair of eyes than those she turns.
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle جِئتُI came قُلتُI said لَهاto her اِسلَميbe well
فَهَلso, is it that كانَthere was فيin قَوليmy saying اِسلَميbe well ماanything that يَضيرُهاharms her
And whenever I came, I would say to her, "Be well."
Was there, then, anything in my saying "Be well" that could harm her?
وَأُشرِفُand I look out بِالقَوزِon the sandhill اليَفاعِlofty لَعَلَّنيperhaps I
أَرىI see نارَthe fire of لَيلىLayla أَوor يَرانيsees me بَصيرُهاher lookout
And I look out from the lofty sandhill, hoping
to see Layla's fire, or for her lookout to see me.
حَمامَةَO dove بَطنِthe hollow of الوادِيَينِthe two valleys تَرَنَّميsing melodiously

O dove of the two valleys' hollow, sing;
may the bright, sweet-watered rainclouds give you drink.

Speak clearly to us—may your feathers ever stay soft,
and may you ever dwell in a green tree, its berries within reach.
