My soul clung to hers before we were created,

and after we were drops of seed, and in the cradle.

So it lived as we lived, and grew,

and though we die, its bond will not be broken.

But it endures through every state,

while what remains of us lies in the darkness of the grave and burial niche.

Nor has Wajid's mother felt the longing I feel for her,

nor has al-Nahdi felt for Hind the longing I feel,

nor did ʿUrwah al-ʿUdhri, when he died, yearn

as I yearn—nor anyone before me or after me.

Yet whoever has died has found rest,

while my heart has neither respite nor guidance.

The flowing water almost scratches her skin

when she bathes in water, so delicate is her skin.

And I long indeed for the scent of her neckline,

as Idris longed for the Garden of Eternity.
