    Early departure has grown urgent among the gathered clans.

    And the dear friends you visit have departed.

    And the neighbors' staff was split, the day they departed,

    By separation at al-Kulaybiyyat, veering away from you.

    A surpassing misery born of parting—there was

    No protest against it but the clouding of serenity.

    A lover came to her with word that the land between Bisha

    And Najran is green across its reaches and rich in rain.

    Will my reason leave me after my learning, though there has spread

    Over my sideburns, after graying, a dusting of gray?

    أَشارَ بِلَيلى نَحوَهُنَّ مُشيرُ

    And those who make me foolish after self-restraint are women;

    Someone gestured toward them, pointing out Layla.

    They have grown used to killing Muslims, as though

    Muslims' blood were their means of purification.

    أَجارَكَ مِن رَيبِ الزَمانِ مُجيرُ

    And they said, 'Marry, and preserve what was between us;

    May a protector shelter you from the vicissitudes of time.'

    They sought my suffering; they fulfilled no desire.

    For the stars have set, or nearly gone blind.
