لَقَدindeed طُفتُI circumambulated سَبعاًseven times قُلتُI said لَمّاwhen قَضَيتُهاI completed them
لَيتَif only هَذاthis لاnot عَلَيَّagainst me وَلاand not لِياfor me
Indeed, I made seven circuits; when I had completed them, I said:
“Ah, would that this counted neither against me nor for me!”

My companions question me, but I cannot understand what
they say, for remembrance of Layla has seized me.
إِذاwhen جِئتَyou come بابَthe entrance of الشِعبِthe ravine شِعبَthe ravine of اِبنِson of عامِرٍAmir
فَأَقرِthen convey غَزالَthe gazelle of الشِعبِthe ravine مِنّيfrom me سَلامِياmy greeting
When you reach the ravine’s entrance—the ravine of Ibn Amir—
then give the ravine’s gazelle my greeting.
وَقُلand say لِغَزالِto the gazelle of الشِعبِthe ravine هَلquestion marker أَنتَyou نازِلٌstaying
بِشِعبِكَin your ravine أَمor هَلquestion marker يُصبِحِwill become القَلبُthe heart ثاوِياlying dead
And say to the ravine’s gazelle: “Are you staying
in your ravine, or will the heart lie dead?”
لَقَدindeed زادَنيincreased in me الحُجّاجُthe pilgrims شَوقاًlonging إِلَيكُمُfor you (plural)
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was قَبلَbefore اليَومِtoday لِلحَجِّtoward the pilgrimage قالِياloathing
The pilgrims have indeed increased my longing for you,
though before today I had loathed the pilgrimage.
وَماand not نَظَرَتlooked عَينيmy eye إِلىat وَجهِthe face of قادِمٍone returning
مِنَfrom الحَجِّthe pilgrimage إِلّاexcept that بَلَّdrenched دَمعيmy tears رِدائِياmy cloak
And never has my eye looked upon the face of one returning
from the pilgrimage without my tears drenching my cloak.
