لَعَمرُكَby your life ماnot ميعادُappointed meeting عَينِكِyour eye وَالبُكاand weeping
بِلَيلاكِfor your Layla إِلّاexcept أَنthat تَهُبَّblows جَنوبُa south wind
By your life, your eye has no tryst with weeping
for your Layla, save when a south wind blows.
يُعاشِرُنيlives with me فيin الدارِthe house مَنone whom لاnot أَوَدُّهُI love him
وَفيand in الرَحلِthe camp مَهجورٌone forsaken إِلَيَّto me حَبيبُbeloved
One I do not love lives with me in the house;
and in the camp is one forsaken, dear to me.
إِذاwhen هَبَّblows عُلوِيُّthe upland one الرِياحِof the winds وَجَدتُنيI find myself
كَأَنّيas though I were لِعُلوِيِّto the upland one الرِياحِof the winds نَسيبُkin
When the wind from the uplands blows, I find myself
as though I were kin to the wind from the uplands.
