For a fair-complexioned woman my heart holds a branch of love,

a deep-rooted passion no beautiful women have sought.

    فَزالَت بُيوتُ الحَيِّ وَهوَ مُقيمُ

    With it my heart settled in the clan's dwelling, then returned with it;

then the clan's dwellings moved away, while it remained.

And whoever's heart is shattered anew by love for them

will die, yet live, as long as he lives, in sickness.

So he is parched and thirsty, driven from a cool drinking-place,

and from the water's refreshing drops, while he circles round.

Their dwelling wept for their absence, and down streamed

my tears—so which of the two mourners should I blame?

Is it this one, who weeps from humiliation and affliction,

or another, who weeps his grief and wanders distraught?

To God I complain of my love for Layla, as did

an orphan to God of the loss of both parents—

an orphan spurned by his closest kin, whose bones

are broken; and the loss of both parents is grievous.

Is it just that your heart is untroubled,

while my heart wanders distraught with what it has concealed?

Whenever Layla is mentioned, I groan at her mention,

as a sick man groans among the women visiting him.

Upon me be the blood of sacrificial camels if my love for her

ever fades with distance over the long passage of time.

Leave me be; my love for her did not arise from your counsel,

but it is her allotted lot and portion.
