I answered 'Layla' to whoever called me, mustering fortitude,

Perhaps my anguish will lift and I shall recover,

And the spirit of life will return to me; for I

Am yielding up my soul—if you could see me.

May Layla's camp be watered, at evening and at dawn,

On earth, by a pouring, thundering cloud.

In every circumstance, whether she draws near or goes far away,

I am enamored of her, lovesick and heartsick.

    وَلَيلي طَويلٌ وَالسُهادُ شَديدُ

    So distance does not console me, nor does nearness help me;

And my night is long, and sleeplessness severe.

The talebearers say to me as they watch me—

And among them are spies and watchers over us—

'Every lover has forgotten his beloved and his close companion,

Yet you are enamored of Layla and devoted to her.'

So leave me to the pain of love I endure,

From a fire whose fuel lies between my ribs.

I struggle with the last remnants of life within me,

Upon my wasted frame, as the soul within me ebbs away.
