أَقولُI say لِظَبيٍto a gazelle مَرَّpassed بيby me وَهوَwhile he was رائِعُstartled
أَأَنتَare you? أَخوbrother of لَيلىLayla فَقالَthen he said يُقالُit is said
I say to a gazelle that passed by me, startled:
“Are you Layla’s brother?” He said, “So they say.”
أَياO شِبهَlikeness of لَيلىLayla إِنَّindeed لَيلىLayla مَريضَةٌill
وَأَنتَyet you صَحيحٌhealthy إِنَّindeed ذاthis لَمُحالُsurely impossible
O likeness of Layla, Layla is ill,
Yet you are healthy—surely this is impossible!
فَإِلّاso if … not تَكُنbe لَيلىLayla غَزالاًa gazelle بِعَينِهِitself
فَقَدthen indeed أَشبَهَتهاhas resembled her ظَبيَةٌa female gazelle وَغَزالُand a gazelle
So if Layla is not a gazelle herself,
Then a doe and a gazelle have indeed resembled her.
