أَحُبّاًLove? عَلىupon حُبٍّlove وَأَنتِwhile you are بَخيلَةٌmiserly
وَقَدand indeed زَعَمواthey have claimed أَنthat لاnot يُحِبُّloves بَخيلُa miser
Love upon love, while you are ungiving?
With love upon love, while you remain stingy,
Yet they have claimed that no miser loves.
And they claim that a miser cannot love.
بَلىyes indeed وَالَّذيby Him whose حَجَّmade pilgrimage to المُلَبّونُthose chanting the pilgrimage call بَيتَهُHis House
وَيَشفىand is healed الجَوىlove’s burning anguish بِالنَيلِby receiving a favor وَهوَthough it is قَليلُlittle
Yes, by Him to whose House the pilgrims make pilgrimage, chanting their call,
Yes, by Him whose pilgrims circle his house,
And love’s anguish is soothed by a favor, however small.
Whose thirst is quenched by the Nile though meager it be,
وَإِنَّand indeed بِناin us لَوif تَعلَمينَyou knew لُغَلَّةٍsurely a burning thirst
إِلَيكَfor you كَماjust as بِالحائِماتِin those circling water غَليلُburning thirst
And in us, if you but knew, is a burning thirst
Indeed, with me lies a burning desire for you,
For you, like the thirst of those circling water.
As camels yearn for shade when the heat is intense.
