أَياAh! وَيحَpity for مَنwhoever أَمسىreached evening يُخَلَّسُis being stolen away عَقلُهُhis reason
فَأَصبَحَand by morning he became مَذهوباًcarried away بِهِwith him كُلَّevery مَذهَبِdirection
Ah, pity him whose reason is stolen away at evening,
and who by morning is swept every which way,
خَلِيّاًbereft مِنَof الخُلّانِfriends إِلّاexcept مُعَذَّباًa tormented one
يُضاحِكُنيlaughs with me مَنhe who كانَused to يَهوىdesire تَجَنُّبيshunning me
bereft of friends, save for one tormented soul.
He who once wished to shun me now laughs with me.
إِذاwhen ذُكِرَتwas mentioned لَيلىLayla عَقَلتُI regained my reason وَراجَعَتand returned
رَوائِعُstartled thoughts قَلبيof my heart مِنfrom هَوىًpassion مُتَشَعِّبِfar-branching
When Layla is mentioned, I regain my reason, and back come
my heart's startled thoughts from a far-ranging passion.
وَقالواand they said صَحيحٌsane ماnot بِهِin him طَيفُa passing touch جِنَّةٍmadness
وَلاand not الهَمُّthe sorrow إِلّاexcept بِاِفتِراءِthrough fabrication التَكَذُّبِlying
And they said, 'He is sane; no touch of madness afflicts him;
his sorrow is nothing but a lying fabrication.'
وَليand I have سَقَطاتٌlapses حينَwhen أُغفِلُI neglect ذِكرَهاremembering her
يَغوصُdives deep عَلَيهاfor them مَنwhoever أَرادَwished تَعَقُّبيto scrutinize me
And I have lapses when I neglect to remember her,
for which anyone seeking to scrutinize me dives deep.
وَشاهِدُand the witness وَجديof my passion دَمعُthe tears عَينيof my eye وَحُبُّهاand love for her

And the tears of my eye attest my passion, while love for her
strips the flesh from my curving bones and my shoulder.
تَجَنَّبتُI avoided لَيلىLayla أَنlest يَلِجَّgrow relentless بِيَwith me الهَوىpassion
وَهَيهاتَbut how futile! كانَwas الحُبُّlove قَبلَbefore التَجَنُّبِavoidance
I avoided Layla lest passion grow relentless in me,
but in vain! Love had come before avoidance.

For no pale-coated doe whose fawn spent the night
at the lower edge of a pool amid ʿarār and khallab plants,
بِأَحسَنَis fairer مِنthan لَيلىLayla وَلاnor أَمَّa mother فَرقَدِof a wild-cow calf

is fairer than Layla, nor is a wild cow with her calf,
her gaze lowered, grazing amid a herd.

I looked through the caravan in the radiance of late morning,
with the eyes of a falcon reared above ʿUrqub,
إِلىtoward ظُعُنٍwomen in camel-litters تَخذيmoving swiftly كَأَنَّas though زُهائَهاtheir tall forms

toward women moving swiftly in litters, their tall forms like
supple tamarisks, or [perhaps palm fronds] of Athlab.
وَلَمand not أَرَI saw لَيلىLayla غَيرَexcept مَوقِفِa halt ساعَةٍof a moment
بِبَطنِin the valley مِنىًof Mina تَرميshe casts جِمارَpebbles المُحَصَّبِof al-Muhassab
And I saw Layla only for a moment's halt,
in Mina's valley, casting the pebbles of al-Muhassab.
وَيُبديand reveals الحَصىthe pebbles مِنهاof her إِذاwhen قَذِفَتshe throws بِهِwith them

And as she casts the pebbles, they reveal
from her cloak the tips of her dyed fingers.
فَأَصبَحتُso I became مِنbecause of لَيلىLayla الغَداةَthat morning كَناظِرٍlike one gazing
مَعَwith الصُبحِthe dawn فيinto أَعقابِthe wake نَجمٍof a star مُغَرِّبِsetting in the west
So that morning, because of Layla, I was like one gazing
at dawn in the wake of a star setting in the west.
أَلاAh! إِنَّماonly غادَرتِyou have left ياO أُمَّmother of مالِكٍMalik

Ah, all you have left, O Umm Malik,
is a wasted husk that goes wherever the wind carries it.

I swore by Him who fixed Thabir in its place,
with mist upon it, like a turbaned man's head,

and by every worn-out she-camel crossing the wilderness,
exhausted, thin as a sword's sheath, urged along in a caravan,

departing from Nuʿman or its slopes
toward the House, or emerging from Kabkab's uplands:

he has his fullest share when he is absent,
and if he comes seeking our bounty, he is not reproached.
لَقَدindeed عِشتُI lived مِنconcerning لَيلىLayla زَماناًfor a time أُحِبُّهاloving her
أَرىI see المَوتَdeath مِنهاbecause of her فيin مَجيئيmy coming وَمَذهَبيand my going
Indeed, I spent a time loving Layla,
seeing death through her in my coming and going.
وَلَمّاand when رَأَتshe saw أَنَّthat التَفَرُّقَparting فَلتَةٌa sudden mishap

And when she saw that parting could come in an instant,
and that whenever we parted, we would go separate ways,

she gestured with a tattooed hand, as though its fingertips were,
in their softness, the fringe of finely finished white silk.
