أُذَلُّI am humbled لِآلِbefore the family of لَيلىLayla فيin هَواهاlove for her
وَأَقبَلُand I turn toward لِلأَكابِرِto the elders وَالصِغارِand the young
I am humbled before Layla’s family in my love for her.
And I turn toward the elders and the young.
إِذاwhen قَلَّdwindles العَزاءُconsolation فَماthen what اِحتِياليmy recourse
مُحِبٌّa lover قَدalready حَشاfilled الأَحشاءَthe innards نارِfire
When consolation dwindles, what recourse have I?
A lover—fire has filled my innards.
فَلاso no وَصلٌunion يُبَرِّدُcools نارَthe fire of قَلبيmy heart
وَلاnor صَبرٌpatience وَمَنand who يَجِدِfinds اِصطِبارِendurance
No union cools the fire of my heart,
Nor does patience—and who can find endurance?
