And were I to visit the House of God and then see her

at its gates, where its doves sought sanctuary,

my clothes would touch hers, if I could,

and its sanctity would not keep me from touching them.

And were she with me when my death approached,

her words would dispel from me the agonies of death.

So it was with lovers before us:

when they died, their soul-birds would visit one another.

Oh, would that we might live together—and if we die,

her bones would lie beside mine among the dead.

And among the departing women is a tender maiden with white teeth,

pampered, whose smile captivates the self-possessed.

When I asked her for a kiss, she drew back and turned away,

like a restive horse shying away, its bridle ringing.

And she bit her thumb, then gestured:

"I fear watchful eyes, lest the sleeping ones awaken."
